OnPage SEO Techniques
OnPage SEO techniques are the cornerstone of a website and it will decide not only your ranking in SERP but also how successfully you can achieve your internet marketing campaigns. OnPage SEO techniques differ from Off Page SEO techniques, both are important components of an overall SEO strategy but OnPage SEO techniques are much more important and stand to generate far better results for you if you have done well. Let’s go through some basics before we start;
Search Engine Optimization
SEO, or search engine optimization, refers to the process of creating and structuring a website and website’s content to please the search engines, primarily Google. Search engines use algorithms to evaluate how useful your site is and what is the relevancy of your site to certain keywords and phrases. When a user types into a search engine results are returned and some will rank more highly than others. The best scenario for a website is that it ranks at the very top of the first page of Google.
Google is the main search engine to be concerned with. What works for Google will certainly produce good results in other search engines. Success in Google is the goal of any webmaster. However, your ranking alone is not the only aspect of using SEO to please search engines.
Search engine optimization is any and all techniques used to improve the way you rank in the search engines. Good SEO is also important for effective internet marketing campaigns. Without being efficiently optimized for the keywords and phrases you want to rank highly for your advertising campaigns will run over budget and fall flat.
What is OnPage SEO
So we know good SEO is important but what is OnPage SEO or OnPage Optimization? The search engine optimization techniques used to please search engines which involve the content on your website and the structure of the pages are OnPage SEO. It’s also important to bear in mind that bad OnPage SEO techniques will actually damage your rankings in the search engines rather than just not working. So it’s very important to do the right things and avoid the wrong ones.
OnPage SEO Vs Off Page SEO – Which one is more important
The answer is very simple, both are important. But there is a difference in the priority. Efforts such as Social media optimization, Link Building ..etc which don’t occur on the pages of your website are Off-Page SEO. Off-Page SEO plays an important role but is dwarfed by OnPage SEO Techniques. Sometimes Off-Page SEO campaigns are poorly structured and yield no benefit at all. In other cases, a well-designed site with good quality OnPage SEO is all that is needed. Particularly in the case of businesses which want to target a specific area, a business dealing locally for example, Off Page SEO is fairly unnecessary. Advantages of OnPage SEO are;
- It is the ‘right’ Search Engine friendly language
- It is more User-friendly
- We get Long-Term Results for the right practice
- Off-Page SEO comes after the OnPage SEO task
So we know that OnPage SEO is vital and that getting it wrong comes at a cost. So what are the OnPage SEO techniques you should be applying to a site?
6 OnPage SEO techniques to improve your rankings
As you know that, apart from these 5 techniques, we must learn all the areas about OnPage. But I am pointing out the most important things which are more important for the beginners.
1.User Focused Content
Google and it’s algorithms (as with all search engines) exist to give searchers better results. They want to deliver the best quality, most useful and most relevant content for the keywords or phrases the user types in.
If you make sure your site is exactly that, you will get better rankings and visitor traffic.
Have a look at top ranked sites for your keywords. Do not under any circumstances copy them but assess what they give the visitor.
They will be giving the visitor well written and original content that doesn’t contain keyword overload or spammy writing. For years people thought that reusing a keyword gave better Google search engine results but since new updates have been put out the opposite is true.
If your site sells “silk cushions” then the naturally occurring mention of this keyword is enough to tell Google that this is what your site sells. You don’t need to mention it tens of times to get this result. If you do mention it too much your content will become unnatural. Unnatural content is less useful to users and therefore you will not do as well.
Write and structure your site the way search engines want you to. Speak the search engines language.
Tips – Research your topic. Try to present useful and well-written information about that keyword. Branch out a little bit from the keyword also. Ask people for feedback. Is the site useful and interesting to them? Never try to trick people to your site. Make the site that they will find most useful. 2.Link Building Program
It is nothing but outbound linking. Linking your content to the relevant outside web page is an important OnPage SEO technique. You don’t need to link out to hundreds of sites. Bear in mind the above point; a visitor should find what you’ve done useful, not confusing or irrelevant.
For an example;
If you write a content about X. And you are linking your content to the other web page or website which are relevant to your content. In this case, you are telling to the search engine that, your page is as important as the linked page. But remember, do not link to the other web page (outside webpage) with your “Targeted Keyword”.
Try to have one or two links to high page rank sites in your niche. PageRank is a system used by Google to denote how valuable and important a site is. High PageRank sites are more valuable to link to and very valuable to receive a link from. If you sell watches, for example, you could link to the Rolex website. Make sure however that the link is justified and flows naturally within the content of the page. You may need to think about this quite carefully.
Try to get some high PageRank sites to link to you. This will take time. However, you are better off spending an hour each day writing to people to ask for a good quality backlink rather than using that hour persuading every site on the internet to link to you. If they are low PageRank sites or become low PR sites, they could damage rather than help you. Rolex is never going to become a low-ranking site.
Tips – Be smart about link building. Keep it to the high PageRank sites even if it takes more effort.
3.Be very careful with Inbound Links.
It is very important to do internal linking. In this content, you can find many internal linking. In this case, I am saying to search engine crawler that my other pages are also as important as this page.
Tips – Keep inbound links to a necessary minimum. Avoid using keywords for inbound links too often. 5-10 is more than enough.
If in doubt ask the golden question “is this good for the user”?
4.Keep it Fast Loading
Google is setting out to punish sites that load slowly. Advert heavy pages full of poorly streamed videos and general bad design aren’t to going to get the same visitors as people who value load time.
Tips – Get someone to test your site and give you honest feedback. You may be proud of your pages but internet users are impatient and studies have shown that even necessitating a few extra second or clicks from them can result in them giving up on your site.
5. URL Structure
The structure of your site is important. One example of this is your URL structure. If you have pages like www.silkcushions.com/144723 this is not as good as www.silkcushions.com/blog/.
Create and submit to Google a sitemap to allow your pages to be categorized. Setting out a stall with a clean and organized, easy to interpret order and structure is just as important online as offline.
Tips – Don’t have any confusing titles in your URLs. Make sure you design your site efficiently and then create and submit a sitemap to Google.
6.Page titles, description, and formatting are important
Cover your basic SEO practices. Search engines don’t just check your content but the way you have formatted and described it. Not doing this poorly can damage your ranking. Format your pages for success with the search engines. Use this checklist to make sure you’re covering all the bases.
- Descriptions. These show up in the search engine results and need to advertise your site (accurately) to a potential visitor.
- Formatting. Format using headings, subheadings and bold for important points. Pay attention to readability and use formatting to improve this.
- Images. Try to use your own original images and if using an existing image reference where you got it from. Make the images efficient by reducing file size. You don’t want a slow loading site because of the images. You can use yahoo smush to do this. Remember to use your ALT tags and to create descriptive file names, this increases your ranking. If you have a lot of images use a content delivery network to manage the page loading times.
